  • ARGO Entity Match & Resolution Helps Students Learn about Advanced Patient Record Matching

Richardson, Texas—ARGO announced today a new partnership with the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) to provide the next generation Enterprise Master Patient Index (EMPI) patient record matching technology to healthcare students worldwide.

ARGO will implement its Entity Match & Resolution EMPI solution to help AHIMA Virtual Lab students establish and maintain unique patient records; allowing evaluation and resolution of similar records into a single, comprehensive patient health record. ARGO and AHIMA will offer this functionality to approximately 10,000 students and potentially through 400 universities across the U.S. and around the globe. The virtual lab will give students full access to the ARGO EMPI solution, enabling them to walk through:

    • Maintaining the integrity of data received from healthcare systems and analyzing how changes to patient demographics affect relationships to other existing medical records

    • Leveraging advanced probabilistic algorithms and custom rules to improve identification of medical record overlays, duplicates, and overlaps

    • Resolving overlays, merging duplicates, and linking overlapped records into a
      community EMPI

    • Managing a patient's health record within and across healthcare organizations

Developed in partnership with ARGO and other health information technology software corporations, the virtual lab allows students to work with the software they will encounter in the workplace in a safe environment that closely simulates real-world scenarios. Lessons and activities designed specifically for the lab applications enable students to test their skills and decision-making abilities without jeopardizing the privacy, security, or integrity of actual medical records.

“To achieve accurate patient matching, future health information management professionals require knowledge on how to leverage specialized technology to lower existing duplicate record rates and prevent the creation of duplicate records,” said AHIMA CEO Lynne Thomas Gordon, MBA, RHIA, FACHE, CAE, FAHIMA. “Incorporating the ARGO EMPI solution into our virtual lab will show students how to achieve a high level of accuracy, leveraging ARGO’s advanced patient matching technology.”

“The increasing complexity of managing a patient's health record within and across healthcare organizations necessitates increased sophistication in matching accuracy and intelligent workflow management,” said ARGO’s Healthcare Business Development Director Steve Kotyk. “The ARGO Entity Match & Resolution solution provides students with these capabilities and enables them to learn how accurate patient records help improve the quality and safety of healthcare, reduce the number of duplicate tests, and lower overall costs.”

  • Richardson, Texas—Verinovum, which provides health information exchange software and infrastructure for the state of Oklahoma, announced today that it improved its matching accuracy of patient records in excess of 25 percent utilizing the ARGO Entity Match & Resolution Enterprise Master Patient Index (EMPI) solution.

Verinovum leverages the ARGO advanced patient matching technology to automatically link millions of patient records for over 1,600 providers. The ARGO technology identified and matched approximately 500,000 patients with incomplete medical records—roughly the population of Oklahoma City—that were missed by the previous EMPI solution. The ARGO solution also allowed the statewide HIE to reduce its manual adjudication work queue by 58 percent, resulting in significant cost savings.

The ARGO EMPI solution detects and links duplicate patient and practitioner records using a highly accurate mix of statistical models and supervised learning methods to dramatically improve accuracy. As such, an effective EMPI provides a critical component of Verinovum’s efforts to improve the quality of care and the health of area residents. “We compared ARGO to other vendors and selected them because they advanced to the next generation of accuracy due to their analytical science core competency,” said Verinovum CTO Chris McLean. He added, “We validated ARGO’s accuracy by extensive statistical sampling and reviewing all of the problematic record sets that our previous EMPI incorrectly linked and matched. Out of all the sets we evaluated, the ARGO system matched 99.9 percent correctly right out-of-the-box. We have integrated EMPI into our overall healthcare solution.”

“Our approach to achieving matching accuracy incorporates advancements in natural language processing and machine learning into probabilistic matching techniques,” said ARGO’s Healthcare Business Development Director Steve Kotyk. “With our advanced probabilistic matching algorithm, it tunes itself according to the characteristics of the patient population it’s managing, and with Verinovum, we achieved a high level of accuracy with no additional subjective tuning.”
